Energy Security

Energy Security is one of the most important issues our country faces today. While it is a national issue, I have taken steps on the state and local levels to increase our energy security. In becoming more energy efficient and investing in renewable energy sources, Tennessee has become as leader among the states on energy issues.

Under the leadership of Governor Bredesen, we have made major clean energy investments. Volkswagen in Chattanooga is building a fleet of clean diesel cars. Nissan is producing electric cars in Smyrna. Hemlock in Clarksville, Wacker in Cleveland, Sharp in Memphis, are all producing solar power. Alstom and SIAG Aerisyn in Chattanooga are building windmill turbines. These investments keep Tennessee moving forward.

In the legislature, I have worked on:

• The landmark Tennessee Clean Energy Future Act that will create new clean energy technology jobs while protecting our environment.
• Green job training curriculum within our Career and Technical Education.
  
• The Tennessee High Growth Sustainable Jobs Act to develop a state plan for the development of clean energy job programs.
• Cutting the sales tax on energy efficient appliances for Tennesseans who wish to cut down on their energy bills.
  
• Legislation to lead by example in energy efficiency:require all state agencies to purchase energy efficient appliances, and require fuel-efficient cars and trucks in the state fleet.
